  1. Play 60 is trying to get kids to get up and get out, to work exercise into their daily routine. Quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints has been part of this movement and has traveled all over the nation to show kids exciting ways to be active. Brees has been to schools and church groups to advocate this movement. He helps out the organization because of his love for children and sports - it gives him another reason to play more football. His faith also leads him to help out; he believes that humans need to take care of their bodies, so the Play 60 campaign follows that belief. He's also led the Play 60 to join up with United We Serve - the government initiative to inform kids about being active daily. Drew Brees has helped the Play 60 with hours and hours of volunteer work and service.

  2. Defending superbowl champion quarterback Drew Brees, from the New Orleans Saints, has been the national spokesman for the NFL Play 60 campaign for the past 2 years. He is currently an active advocate in the state of Louisiana for improving health and fitness by promoting a healthy lifestyle to kids. Brees takes part in this great program for kids by encouraging them to stay active, and by doing things with them on and off the field. For instance, he took a group of kids out to the Mississippi Delta to go fishing and later went to a local park to toss the ball around with them. Also, as many of you have probably seen, Drew Brees participated in a thanksgiving day Play 60 commercial with President Barack Obama, Demarcus Ware, and Troy Polamalu, where they took some time to teach kids to stay active by doing things they enjoy, such as playing football or playing tag with their friends. The reason why Drew Brees and many other NFL players are apart of Play 60 is because they are seeking to promote a healthy lifestyle for kids all over the country by encouraging them to get outside and play/exercise for at least 60 minutes a day to combat childhood obesity.

  3. New York Giants player, Eli Manning, has become a leading advocate for the new Play 60 campaign to help motivate kids to go out and play for at least an hour a day to stay healthy. To improve the health of kids across America, Manning started within the state of New York where he has become the national spokesman for the "What Moves U" program that is endorsed by the Giants as well. This program is primarily focused on having fun while exercising to ensure the benefits- a long, healthy life. Eli Manning endorses the idea of the enjoyment of playing because he is very passionate about educating kids about the physical benefits of exercising and playing so that they may have the opportunity to be healthy. Manning continues to spread the word about healthy lifestyles, Play 60, and "What Moves U" by making appearances at elementary and middle schools and going through series of exercises with students of all ages. His charisma and passion for exercise is motivating to many kids and further provokes a change towards healthier lifestyles.

  4. Play 60 is the campaign to help get young kids up and active as a result of extremely high obesity numbers throughout the United States. Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has become involved in play 60 in order to encourage kids, including his own, to exercise. As one of the many spokesmen for what moves you on Nickelodeon, Steve Smith has been involved in commercials advertising the Play 60 challenge. Smith encourages children of all ages to be active and teaches them that you can have fun and exercise no matter how old you are. He says that it does not matter what activities you are doing only that you are doing something. It can be skateboarding, swimming, sports, or just playing. By being a part of the play 60 challenge Smith has realized his role in making sure that his kids are active. Through play 60, Steve Smith has helped many kids across the United States to become active and healthier.

  5. Play 60 is a program set up by the NFL in the effort to stop childhood obesity and to encourage healthier lives. Specifically Play 60 asks kids to play and be active for 60 minutes a day. Many members of the NFL, coaches, players, and even cheerleaders, are involved in promoting play 60. Maurice Jones from the Jacksonville Jaguars is one athlete in particular that has worked hard to get the word out about healthy lives and play 60. Jones is featured in his own public service announcement where he warns children on the dangerous of bad eating habits and the importance of active living. Like several other athletes he also visited elementary schools near his home and spoke to all of the students about how to be healthier individuals. Children and adults alike should take the Play 60 idea to heart and try to get on the right track to healthy living.

Donovan McNabb, the quarterback of the Washington Redskins, is involved with Play 60 in his community to fight childhood obesity. Washington D.C. currently has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the nation. On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, NcNabb hosted one of the largest interactive fitness work-outs in the world at FedEx Field in Washington D.C. Six hundred students participated setting a Guinness World Record. McNabb encouraged the kids to take the Play 60 pledge and to include 60 minutes of physical activity in their schedules everyday. The educators involved in the event were also given information on how to improve their school physical education classes. McNabb also told the participants about his father's personal struggle with diabetes, and how diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer can be prevented by eliminating obesity. He also encouraged the kids to get their families involved in the program. Changing a family's poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle would be beneficial for everyone. McNabb's support for the NFL's Play 60 program along with that of other players could go a long way in helping to decrease childhood obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles among the nation's children and families.

  7. Before the Pro Bowl, the players split up to three different counties to do work for Play 60.
The Broward County event Players constructed a customized playground at the school, which is currently without a gym or play area. In Miami-Dade County, players hosted an NFL PLAY 60 Football Festival and healthy cooking demonstration. They lead local children in football and fitness drills and hosted a healthy cooking demonstration. A third group of players volunteered in Palm Beach County and built a play-space for physically challenged students at Boca Raton Community Middle School. Specifically speaking, Dallas Cowboys tight end, Jason Witten, has been a large role in the volunteering of Play 60. Jason has made several appearances at schools, one being Grapevine Middle School. He plays with the kids of the schools and talks to them about the dangers of obesity. He has also joined up with the Ad Council and Texas State Senator Jane Nelson in a campaign to help stop childhood obesity by creating PSAs targeted at school-aged children. Witten is one of many NFL players who have joined up with the Play 60 group to help change the life styles of children and in turn, creating a healthier future.

  8. Derrick Ward is a consistent volunteer of NFL play 60. He helps the association with exercising children who struggle with their weight. Some of the activities Ward participates in with the kids are football drills, fitness drills, and also learning how to cook healthier. The reason why he is so passionate about the program is because Ward is a heavy man himself. However despite his weight, he is still a healthy and very mobile man and wants to share his habits with children who are battling with their weight. Even before Ward was drafted, he enjoyed playing with kids at the park. He is a great contribute to NFL Play 60!

  9. NFL play 60 is the campaign to get children to go out and exercise for 60 minutes a day to prevent childhood obesity. Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has been a big part of the program since his entry into the league. He created a game called Folleyball for the campaign, has participated in events all over the country, and shot multiple commercials for the program in order to encourage kids to exercise. Ryan's involvement with NFL play 60 has helped to encourage kids all across the country to join the fight against childhood obesity and start living a healthy life. Ryan, along with several of his Falcons teammates, have given children a positive example for exercise and health and joined together to film a commercial NFL play 60 that aired throughout the 2010 season.

  10. Celebrity pro athletes and the NFL has teamed up to enforce their national NFL PLAY 60 campaign. The campaign also continues its movement through the NFL off-season. They are committed to reversing the effects of childhood obesity by performing various kinds of exercises like running, playing a sport for sixty minutes a day. NFL player Tory Polamalu joins President Obama for a special public service announcement that will debut during each of the three NFL games played on thanksgiving. Tory and the President, along with other NFL players shot a commercial in front of the white house encouraging kids to go out and exercise. The President invites the kids to his house so that they can exercise and play with the NFL players while having fun. The kids are enlightened to see the President participate in this activity. This is a brilliant idea having the President and Tory participate while helping the kids get active and healthy in order to fight childhood obesity. PLAY 60 encourages parent, educator, coach or friends to help make kid's life healthier by just getting them to go outside and play. The kids are also reminded that NFL players play for 60 minutes each game, so they should make sure to play too!

  11. NFL Play 60 is an initiative to tackle the issue of childhood obesity. The main proponents of the initiative are NFL players, coaches, and owners who want to see that their younger fans are physically active for at least 60 minutes a day. St. Louis Rams Running back, Steven Jackson, is one of these players who has a real interest in helping kids to become more physically active. Since is a spokesperson for Play 60, Jackson makes an effort to reach out to the kids who go to school in the St. Louis public school system, as well as those kids who are members of the local Boys and Girls clubs. Also, Jackson and the Rams annually team up with the St. Louis Dairy Council to inform kids on how to eat healthier in order to fuel their bodies and their active lifestyles.

  12. Although Tiki Barber is not currently a professional athlete, he is a retired NFL football player that used to play running back for the New York Giants. Since retiring he has become a prominent broadcaster, businessman and most of all philantropist. Just this month, speaking as chairman of his corporation TikiVentures LLC, Barber collaborated with Michelle Obama to launch a national campaign called "Let's Move" that will focus it's efforts towards eardicating childhood obesity. This growing epidemic is a very crucial issue in today's society and requires attention in order to promote healthiness for the youth of America. This issue specifically relates to Tiki Barber because he grew up in public housing so therefore he personally experienced the neccesity of being active. Barber says that "he will do whatever he can to support the cause and bring awareness to this very crucial issue" . This newly established campaign will focus on 4 specific areas to fight obesity. These four goals are increasing the number of healthy schools in the country, increasing the amount of regular activity children are experiencing, improving the availabilty of healthy food options in underdeveloped rural areas or urban areas, and lastly emporing consumers to make better lifestyle choices. I think the time and effort Barber is devoting to this cause is very admirable and the collaboration with first lady Michelle Obama will result in very tangible and effective advances in fighting childhood obesity.

  13. The NFL play 60 has one simple goal, get child obesity reduced by having kids get physical activities for at least 60 minutes a day. Mario Williams, a defensive end for the Houston Texans is an active participant for the NFL play 60. He is most recognized in his commercial where he is shown running and picking up a kid. Williams has helped with building playgrounds in the Houston area in order to help with children playing outside. He has also had multiple football camps where he teaches kids the basics of football, how to eat right and how to be a better person. Williams says when he was younger he was a little over weight, but then he started to work out and lost fat and gained a bunch of muscle. He decided to get involved in NFL play 60 because he thinks he might be able to help that happen to someone.

  14. Greg Jennings has been a great demonstration of how NFL players are influencing kids from all across America. He arrived at Little Chute Middle School to talk to the students about how their activeness in being healthy and being involved in Play 60 is such a good thing and is helping their lives in the future. They have been active in Fuel Up to Play 60 and were awarded $1,500 dollars to better pursue their active lifestyle. He told them "I started right where all of you are," he said. "I started with a goal in mind, (told) myself that I wanted to be successful and put in the effort that it takes to be successful with a certain amount of passion. To me, that's the most important part — the passion." After his speech he proceeded to play sports and dance with the children to better influence them to be active. He also told them his goals of becoming an actor to better pursue his active lifestyle which also gave the students more reason to be active in order to achieve the goals they want.

Paul Pierce is one of the many professional athletes that grew up in a rough neighborhood and had to endure many hardships to make it where he is today. Due to the adversity he faced as a kid, Paul Pierce decided to establish The Truth Fund to provide disadvantaged kids with educational opportunities. As a result of this program, Pierce also established a program called In this program, Paul Pierce provides children with incentives for exercising daily. The program requires kids to wear a wristband that is able to track the amount of physical activity that an individual completes. After every 60 minutes of exercise, the wristband gives the kids a reward code in which they can input onto the fitclub34 website and possibly win cool prizes such as an ipod nano, a wii, and many other prizes. This is a great program because it not only encourages kids to exercise, but it also gives kids an incentive for exercising daily. His program also includes an informational website that gives both parents and kids tips on how to stay healthy (daily exercises, proper nutrition, and etc.). Furthermore, Paul Pierce is also a chairman of the nplay foundation (an organization that consists of numerous athletes wanting to lower childhood obesity). Through his tireless efforts, Paul Pierce has been a very important combatant of childhood obesity.

  16. Play 60 is a program created to reduce childhood obesity. One out of three kids are obese or overweight and that is due to lack of exercise. One athlete dedicated to stop childhood obesity is Matt Ryan. His idea is that for 30 minutes a day a group of people, about 10, split into teams and play a game of volleyball, following the same rules but instead of hitting the ball the players throw it and catch it. And instead of it being a volleyball they use a football and if the ball hits the ground then a point in rewarded to the other teams. They would play games to 21 and best of 3. Matt Ryan is doing this because he wants to give the children in Atlanta hope for a better future and a chance to play in the NFL. Also when he was a kid he was a little overweight but he said with some motivation he got into the gym and started to work out and become in shape. And look at him now, he is starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. So he thinks that if kids get motivation to work out and stay in shape, great things can happen.

  20. One major problem in the United States today, is obesity. And even more serious is the childhood obesity epidemic. So one program that helps try to prevent childhood obesity is NFL's PLay 60, where each child is encouraged to go outside and play for 60 minutes. Since many children look up to athletes, the organization uses these athletes as endorsers so that the kids will actually go and play outside. ONe athlete who promotes this program is the Cleveland Brown's OT, Joe THomas. Thomas and many other Browns player recently helped build a public playground in Cleveland to help kids fulfill their goal of play 60 minutes every day. I believe this a great program and can potentially save many young lives, and reputations of players.

The Play 60 program aims to get kids across america to put down their xbox or playstation controllers, turn off their T.V.s and computers and go outside and play for 60 minutes everyday. In an effort to support the Play 60's message, Hasselbeck took one of his days off to take a local 6th grader in seattle to school in 2008. He surprised the 6th grader, named Andy Co of issaquah middle school by showing up and knocking on his door before school. They then took a limo to campus where Hasselbeck jumped rope and did pushups at the school's assembly as he spoke about the importance of staying active and being healthy. By personally adressing children in his community, Hasselbeck shows his commitment to the programs movement of fighting childhood obesity. 31. Through the NFL Play 60 campaign, the awareness of national childhood obesity is being fostered. Furthermore, the epidemic is being combated, as physical activity is encouraged by famous athletes, so that children will begin to enjoy exercising and, thus, being healthy at a young age. However, it is not just members of the NFL that are strengthening the fight against childhood obesity, since many other organizations and sports leagues are following suit. For example, Paul Pierce, the Boston Celtics captain has joined this fight by forming an alliance with Switch2Health Corp. to strengthen the health and wellness of children. Moreover, he created the FitClub34, which is a rewards-based exercise and nutrition program that gives kids the tools and information needed to become more physically fit and healthy. Additionally, this program offers incentives that motivate the children to become more active. Although Pierce remembers relying on physical activities for entertainment when growing up, he realizes that kids today are overwhelmed by the availability of entertainment systems and electronics for entertainment. Thus, he hopes to help attract modern children to old-fashioned physical exercise, in order to fight the frightening statistics becoming known, such as that of “in America, childhood obesity has doubled since the 1970s and tripled since the 1960s.” Therefore, despite being a dedicated athlete, Pierce takes time within the programs that he is involved in to spread awareness of childhood obesity and fight its growth through encouragement and incentives, due to his understanding that the problem is increasingly harming the future of the United States.

  33. The NFL PLay 60 program is a way for NFL players to help kids excercise. The reason behind this is due to the large amount of kids who are obese these days. In fact, in the last decade or two, the numbers of kids who are obese have doubled if not even tripled. One NFL player who is a huge supporter of this is Ray Lewis. Ray visits schools and just plays with the kids. Whether it would be throwing balls to them or simply a little scrimmage they kid are running around and having a blast. Ray contributes to his society in different ways also. Lewis started the Ray Lewis 52 Foundation which is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide personal and economic assistance to disadvantaged youth. For example, the foundation adoptes 10 families during the holiday season. Other methods used by Ray to recieve funds are an annual celebrity auction and bowling tournament, the Great Maryland Duck Derby, and Thanksgiving food drives. To show appreciation for all his efforts Ray receieved the "Act of Kindness" Award for his work in the community.

  34. Through the program Play 60, the NFL is attempting to "tackle" childhood obesity. The campaign suggests that children should be active for at least 60 minutes a day. In the TV spot, you see a handful of NFL players working out and playing with the kids. Bengels players Kieth Rivers, Chinedum Ndukwe, and Dhani Jones are shown doing jumping jacks with the kids and throwing and catching footballs with the kids. With kids seeing professional athletes playing with them, they will be encouraged to workout or even just run around outside for, hopefully, 60 minutes a day. With kids doing this all across the country, we will definitely tackle childhood obesity.

Strahan said he joined as the spokesman for the Pass the Good program due to his strong relationship with the NFL and Sports Authority and also because he thought it was an excellent way to teach kids the positive results of sharing and teamwork. So far, Strahan has made appearances in commercials for Pass the Good/Play 60 during the Super Bowl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUxL4buVctg) and at a press conference in Dallas that promoted the programs. The founders of Pass the Good believe that, when families who are suffering due to our current economic situation receive game equipment they can’t afford, kids will be more motivated to get outside and play for an hour a day (as part of Play 60). By increasing the opportunities for children to play sports, hopefully they will play and exercise more frequently, which in turn will help combat childhood obesity. Michael Strahan is the perfect spokesperson for the Pass the Good and Play 60 Campaigns, thanks to his name recognition and strong influence in the sports world. NFL Play 60 was launched in October 2007, and it has been motivating kids to be active for at least 60 minutes a day, in order to tackle childhood obesity. Many popular athletes in the NFL have taken part in this program, like Baltimore Raven's running back, Matt Lawrence. He took part in kids Play 60 by helping kids at the annual Easter Egg Roll on the south lawn of the white house. He also plays catch with many of his young fans, and runs on the field with them. One-third of the kids in America are obese or at risk of obesity, and only 8 percent of elementary school provide physical education. With the help of NFL play 60 kids have the opportunity to have fun exercising with some of their favorite athletes. I think that this program is really making a difference in the health of young kids, and it is going to make the next generation of youth much more active and healthy.

  37. The NFL play 60 program has the perfect idea to get kids up and active and fight childhood obesity. One Dallas Cowboys player, Pat Watkins, is doing his part in this project. He, along with several other of his teammates took time to visit local Dallas middle schools to promote getting active for at least 60 minutes a day. Watkins thinks that it is important for him and his teammates to do this because the kids need to see role models and that people who they look up too are staying active. He says that sometimes it motivates the kids to turn off the television and go work out or play like the football players do. Watkins want kids to live healthy lifestyles and be able to pursue their dreams. Staying fit and active is a huge part in this and why Watkins participates in this program.

To go along with it's Play 60 champaign, the NFL recently introduced "Fuel Up To Play 60." The mission statement of this program "to make a commitment to healthy eating and 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Make a difference for yourself and make your school an even better place." Athletes of all levels are committing to play 60 minutes everyday and are also making commercials promoting the program. Cowboys superstar and defensive end DeMarcus Ware has jumped on with this program and recently made a commercial with President Obama supporting Play 60. DeMarcus, along with his wife Taniqua, has also been seen with a group of local kids from the Salvation Army presenting them with “Play 60” jerseys to wear when they play. It's great to know that my favorite player (DeMarcus Ware) on my favorite team (Dallas Cowboys) not only is tackling his opponents but is also helping tackle obesity.

Bob Sander is the spokesperson for NFL Play 60. He stars in a PSA about the need for exercise and activity in order to combat obesity. He is currently a free agent, but played most of his career for the Indianapolis Colts. He is known for punishing style of play, despite his small stature, something that probably comes from Sanders’ childhood and rough neighborhood. He also operates camps in Indianapolis that are run in coordination with NFL Play 60. Sanders says that when he was child, he wished was able to attend camp, but because of difficult financial circumstances, he was not able to. With Play 60, he is able to help kids get active and lose weight, while also helping children in financially difficult circumstances attend camp, an experience he didn’t have. With the myriad of examples in which NFL players are engaged in less than legal actions, it’s nice to see at least one give back to his community, especially someone who came from difficult circumstances.

  40. Recent winner of the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Blake Griffin, defies gravity and has made the Los Angeles Clippers an exciting franchise to watch. Not only is he considered one of the best players of his draft year, but he has produced more thrilling highlight reels than most all-star players during the 2010-2011 season. For each time Griffin dunks in a game this season, he will donate $100 to the Dunking for Dollars campaign to fight childhood obesity along with Nestle who has offered to match dollar for dollar. So far this season, Griffin has made 137 dunks for a grand total of $137,000 alone. He is truly a humble player who is fighting against childhood obesity by donating money he has made.

Demarcus Ware, the pro bowl outside linebacker of the Dallas Cowboys, is an active member in the NFL play 60 program. He and his wife organized a gathering of local kids from the Salvation Army and presented those kids with their NFL Play 60 jerseys, which they wore at the next Cowboys game. Ware is also known for his part in the "fuel up to play 60" program with Indianapolis Colts pro bowl wide receiver Reggie Wayne in which they both shared their experiences with local kids and how they were able to play 60 as kids. The determined spirit of these athletes has become contagious to these kids and enabled them to fight off obesity with renewed vigor.

  42. Charles Woodson is a spokesperson for the NFL Play 60 movement in Wisconsin. He travels to schools in Green Bay area to spread the importance of living an active lifestyle. His speeches are most often on the topics of good nutrition, exercise, and hard work. He does his best to promote an active and healthy lifestyle to the youth of his area, because he knows that that is the only way that the future of American health can get better. The MVP and 2-time defensive player of the year knows all about the importance of being healthy, because his younger brother was obese until Charles pushed for him to lose weight. Charles is a hard worker, and spreads his hard work to the kids!

  44. Hockey legend Mike Richter has teamed up with ING to help fight childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles in his community. Richter, a former NHL goaltender, founded the Run For Something Better foundation, which is a youth running program. This program has successful taught thousands of New York children how to find the joys of running, and ultimately lead healthy lives. Since founding the Run For Something Better foundation, it has since spread to other communities and cities including Denver, Miami and Atlanta. Richter also hopes that his personal goal of one day running in the New York Marathon, encourages children to set their own personal fitness goals, and become another casualty of obesity.

In a day and age where childhood obesity is one of the biggest issues in American society, it is truly a blessing to have people, especially professional athletes, who are willing to take time out of their busy schedules to teach kids the importance of living a healthy lifestyle as well as many different examples of how to get out and play and exercise. One example of an athlete who does this is Roberto Garza, an offensive lineman for the Chicago Bears. Over the past few years Garza has gone to numerous schools and children's hospitals to talk to the children about healthy eating habits as well as daily exercise to stay healthy and to stay away from childhood obesity. In dealing with childhood obesity himself, he now lives a healthy lifestyle and can pass his story on to the thousands of kids he visits each year. With people like Garza helping out, it is surely a huge help in the fight against childhood obesity.

Play 60 is all about being active and making it a habit. This weekend I was very active. On Friday, I played in a rugby match against Jesuit's team, who happens to be number 4 in the nation. Needless to say, we lost. A rugby game is two halves, 35 minutes each, and if you know anything about rugby you could guess that would be pretty exhausting. Saturday, my friends and I decided to have a play some soccer, so we all met up at Wagon Wheel park. There were enough people there to have a nice little pick me up game. Soccer is a great way to excercise, mainly because it's so much fun that you don't want to stop playing. We played for at least an hour. Finally I had rugby practice on Sunday for an hour and a half. All in all it was a very active weekend, and I plan on continuing being active for the rest of the week!
