  1. After interviewing my neighbor, a Clinical Pediatric Audiologist, she expressed the needs of the community as getting affordable health insurance, lower deductables and higher amounts of quality health care. She believed that the community could help out with these things by holding health fairs, providing immunizations for infants and children, and donating time and expertise in helping families out with health insurance. I agree with what she had to say and recommend, with the economy already being unstable, it is hard for some families to provide their families with the best health benifits and opportunities. By helping provide for such people, our community can become safer and better provided for, giving everyone a healthy life.

  2. What are the needs of our community?
Dr. Clifford: Coppell is an affluent community so most of the citizens of Coppell have easy access to healthcare. Most of our citizens can easily afford routine medical examinations.
What could we do to help?
Dr. Clifford: We want people to follow established recommendations. One of the biggest problems that we face is compliance (how well one follows instruction). Everyone knows that you should not smoke or drink in excess and you should see your doctor regularly for check up examinations. If people would follow those recommendations and follow their doctor’s advice then Coppell, and the entire country, would be healthier. Although most people in Coppell do not have a problem with access to healthcare there are some residents who use the county health system. In order to help others, one could give a ride to a neighbor who needs healthcare through the county hospital (Parkland) or people could volunteer at their local hospital to assist the community.

After talking to my dad I think that people can help each other by taking care of themselves. Many students do not listen to their doctor and come to school even though they are sick, which creates more problems in the future. I also believe that if everyone is available to lend a hand to those less fortunate then the community will stay healthier.

  3. I talked with Janie Hyslop, a registered nurse at Austin Elementary.
Mrs. Hyslop, what are the needs of our community?
Janie Hyslop: I personally believe that there needs to be more opportunities for low income families to receive basic medical care. Immunizations, basic treatment, and check ups are extremely important in maintaining good health, and a lot of these low income houses don't receive adequate med care.
As a community, what can we do to to help low income families receive medical care?
Mrs. Hyslop: I know CHS has provided free dental care in the past. This could also apply to the immunizations and basic check ups. Most low income kids are coming to school sick because they can't afford medical care, thus causing the rest of the school to get sick. These kids deserve medical care and if CHS could provide easy access to them, there would most likely be a huge difference in the amount of sick kids each year.

Following the conversation that I had with my mom, I realized that I am so fortunate to receive even the most basic of medical care. If we could get a medical center to come to our school and help out with immunizations and check ups, I feel that we would not only be preventing sickness, but we would be giving low income families the opportunity to receive what they deserve.

  4. I interviewed Colleen Gothman who is both my mother and a Registered Nurse First Assist at Medical City. When I asked her what she thought of Coppell's medical systems, she replied that she thinks that Coppell has fantastic medical programs. However, she believes that Coppell needs to place a larger emphasis on programs for the elderly. In Coppell, many senior citizens live on their own and very far from any family. They live lives with few close connections and relationships. This can become quite a problem the older they become. As they age, they both lose even more connections with others and become less capable of the upkeeping of their own health. Mrs. Gothman believes that more programs should be implemented to assist these elderly. An option she suggested of the top of her head were perhaps more local nurses and for them to be perhaps affiliated with churches.
To summarize what Mrs. Gothman said; Coppell has a great health system but it is lacking in the case of assisting the elderly. More programs should be created and implemented to assist Coppell's senior citizens.

  5. I interviewed my mom,Esther Ibihwiori, an RN in Baylor Medical Center at Carrollton. When dealing with the Coppell Community, she thought that Coppell has a good community from the schools to the health centers. Some problem she feels are increasing in Coppell are illegal drugs and insurance. The area everyone needs to focus on is how to stop the spread of drug problems especially in teens. Another is to raise awarness, either by talking to your doctors and nurses about health and how it affects your family. Besides that, Coppell has the capability to grow productively in health and the community.

  6. 1. What are the needs for our community?
    A. I feel the general population needs to be educated, on how their own involvement in' their' health care can affect their daily lives. The community needs to be plugged into easy access education that involves both dietary and exercise programs. The programs need to be set up as "common sense" plans...life style changes that promote healthy active lives and allow the "people" to see how much better life is when you are active physically....this would give the general population both a positive outlook both physically and mentally (the programs are available).

    2. What do you and your other co workers feel patients (the community) can do to help?
    A. As stated above....patients/the community needs to engage...they need to learn to take responsibility for their actions or for the lack of their actions....ie you are responsible for what you eat and how you "recreate" exercise.

    3. In anatomy, we are having a science fair, what free instruments or materials, could you bring (hypothetically) to show the students how to use?
    A. Being an anesthesiologist, I can bring the equipment I use in the OR to secure airways and care for the anesthetized patient.

    4. What are these instruments or materials, listed above, used for in your work force?
    A. The items I would bring consist of laryngeal scopes, endotracheal tubes, LMA's, and an assortment of intavenous lines used to give patients medications and fluids.

  7. I interviewed my Mom, an owner of a health care firm and is a certified nurse/health care agent who has clients in Coppell,Irving, and Arlington

    1. What do you think the needs for Coppell are?

A:Knowledge, Coppell people are generally mid to high class with a solid education. However, many people are not completely knowing of health care or their own general health, despite the greater focus of it in recents years in politics. As a community more could be done to promote healthier lifestyles and more in depth information about their health care

2.What do you think you and your firm could do to aid the cause?

A: I think my workers and I could convince and talk more in depth about the necessity of a healthy lifestyle and to make it a priority in their livesa

3.What are common instruments do you and your nurses use in the workforce?

A: I use a variety of needles, stephoscopes, Laryngeal scores, Tracheal Tubes, and lines to give Patients their medication

  8. I interviewed Dr. Leigh Ann Scott

We are doing a health expo at chs in January. What could we offer our community at this expo?
-I feel that you could offer screenings for high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol (heart disease), glucose levels (diabetes) and mobile mammography (breast cancer). I believe that these are fundamental tests that could easily be performed at the Health Expo.

How could we help those in need?
    - I feel that Coppell could help those in need by having local clinics offer free screenings once every quarter. These tests help by allowing underprivileged people to have access to their basic health care with the goal being preventive health. From these screenings, referrals could be made as necessary.

After talking to Dr. Scott I feel as though there are many simple ways that Coppell can help in regards to basic healthcare. These screenings can help educate the population and could even save someones life.

  9. I interviewed Dr. Patricia Cates, Physical thrapist, teacher, and Chiropractor, from Parker Chiropractic and Trintiy Orthopedics in Hurst, TX.

I asked Dr. Cates about some of the health problems in the community of Coppell and some plans of action we could take in our upcoming health expo.

Her immediate response was how the medical field stresses Health and Wellness. Her initial response was pretty broad so i asked her to elaborate.

"Coppell is a prosperous community that has everything that it needs to be a productive healthy community, for the most part. The main problem is commitment!" She continued, "Many of the basic health problems in the communtiy such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, poor eye sight and hearing.... etc. can be prevented through a frequently active workout plan and a proper diet."

For our health expo she suggested that we set up incentives that encourage a healthy proactive lifestyle as well as promoting certain products and supplements that help maximize the productivity and longevity of the body.

  10. Interviewed Mrs.Brinkman, Health Science & Micro Teacher:

    What are the needs in?

-I think we should follow the model in Lewisville and Carrollton and try and provide families without health insurance to have the option to have insurance and other health related benefits like dental care.

We also need to open up more clinics to support flu vaccinations, if Coppell offers to open up their own Coppell Clinic and have doctors and nurses help volunteer to families and other patients.

We also need to raise awareness those struggling, especially families, by providing more food in the food pantry and donating more. Even during the holidays and holiday breaks, students that have reduced meals at school might also need meals during the break.

Other people that try are struggling with rent and payments might need clothing they can't afford at the moment, and if we can help those, then we can decreased the needs and help the community.
