Grocery Store Field Trip

Do you think eating healthy is cheaper or more expensive than eating processed foods?  Can people on a limited budget afford a balanced diet?  Could you buy a one days balanced diet, all three meals, for under $8?  What if you had a family of 4?  Could you still survive on $8 a day?

  1. Eating healthy is generally more expensive than eating processed foods. People on a limited budget cannot afford a balanced diet. When researching the prices of healthy foods, it is obvious that it is more expensive for a family to eat healthy than to eat cheap processed foods. Although it isn't a lot of food, it is possible to buy a balanced diet for under eight dollars. With $1.19 Yoplait yogurt, $2.14 for lettuce for a salad, and $2 on a Lean Cuisine for dinner. To make your salad taste better, you can make a homemade italian dressing with many spices that are already at home, such as vinegar, sugar, salt, oregano, garlic and chili powder. It would be difficult to feed a family of four on this budget, that is why so many families are over weight. The cheap foods are the unhealthy foods. If you only had to feed yourself, it would be possible to live off $8 a day for food.

  2. Eating healthy is more expensive than eating processed foods. Every time I go to the grocery store the "organic" fruits and foods are always more expensive than the regular foods. Chips and cookies compared to foods such as fruits and vegetables give a larger serving size for less money. However, it is very possible to eat a balanced meal off of $8. You can buy pre-made meals to save on cooking from lean cuisine and eating right and steamer bowls that have a balanced meal in them for around $2-$3 a meal. To go with that, you could throw in a few fruits and make a fruit salad. You can buy strawberries for about $3.50 when they are on sale and you can get 3 bananas for about $1.50. Lastly you can get your dairy serving by drinking a glass of milk from buying a gallon for $2.50.

  3. Eating a healthy diet is more expensive than an unhealthy diet. I came to this conclusion after pricing several all-natural, organic foods for this assignment. With $7.73, I was able to make a menu of 6 total food items to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For breakfast, I decided to eat old-fashioned oatmeal ($2 per container) and an organic banana (56 cents). At lunch, the meal was a spinach salad ($2 per bag) and all-natural yogurt (84 cents). And for dinner, organic soup ($2 per can) and an orange (33 cents). This meal would provide an average person with a good supply of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats. A large portion of the carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals would come from the vegetables and fruits, the protein from the oatmeal , and the fat from the yogurt. As a one-day diet for an active person, this probably would not be a big enough diet. There would have to be more fats, proteins, and starchy, mid to high carb foods for an athlete. Overall, I would say this diet is feasible and worth the money. However, I would not say that this diet was more convenient, or easy, to follow in comparison to a diet composed of unhealthy, heavily processed foods.

Eight dollars for one person a day is simply not enough for a well balanced diet. My partner and I spent exactly $8 and we bought a 2 a day fruit drink, 1 pound of chicken, yogurt/granola, and an energy bar. Although many of these contents are organic and made with whole grains, they still do not compose a healthy diet. When roaming down the aisles of Tom Thumb, all of the healthy food choices were significantly more expensive than the more unhealthy choices. Simply Orange orange juice costs $3.19 for 1.75 liters while Tropicana costs $2.04. (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/244637/simply_orange_no_pulp_orange_juice.html) Although we were technically able to provide a balanced meal that had various amounts of carbs, proteins, sugars and fats, a person who has government food stamps cannot receive a truly well balanced meal on less than $8.
